As previously reported , the queen of British soul, Beverley Knight, will be joining us at Rockwell to perform with Feeling frontman Dan Gillespie Sells. Beverley's out on the road at the moment promoting her brand new single 'Beautiful Night' and album '100%' so we snuck in a quick ten minute coffee break with her to discuss her all time favourite collaborations.
Hi, Beverley! We can't wait to hear you and Dan dueting at Rockwell. Why did you two decide to work together?
I love The Feeling, and Dan and I are friends who have sung together in the past so we thought it would be great to reprise it!
Can you give us any clues as to what we'll hear you sing?
We're keeping it a secret for now, so all I'll say is that we're going to be performing some real 'roof raisers.'
You're almost a veteran of the music scene now; what's been the favourite duet you've performed?
I have sung so many duets over the years, from the late Lynden David Hall, to Ali Campbell, Jocelyn Brown and even inadvertently, Stevie Wonder! My fave duet has to be my latest with Chaka Khan for the song "Soul Survivor" on my album 100%, that woman's voice is unbridled, a wonder, a force of nature. I was going crazy just being in the booth with her!
Well, we can't wait what you and Dan come up with on the night. Now we'd love to know your all time favourite collaborations?
They've got to be:
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell - You're All I Need To Get By.
They became the duet king and queen of Motown. The song itself is outstanding, and hearing them sing, I think you can hear just how close the two of them became. They both had very melodic and even sweet voices that soared together; I love the interweaving of the vocals in the bridge before each chorus when they lock and harmonise together. So sad we lost them both.
Brandy and Monica - The Boy Is Mine.
What a great vocal punch-up. Two killer singers arguing it out, backed by Rodney Jerkins' heavyweight four-to-the-floor beats. Absolutely everyone in R&B-land had this song and would sing every lick and ad-lib. It just had sass all over it, and split listeners into a playful "team Brandy team Monica" rivalry, such was the excellence of both vocals.
Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross - Endless Love.
This is such a favourite of many people and it's not hard to see why. I am proud to say that I have sung this with Lionel himself on TV, and it is a youtube hit. It is a simple and devastatingly heart-tugging melody and lyric. Their voices are extra sweet but are never over sung which makes it a complete classic. The fact that it speaks of that first love you ever experience, makes it all the more poignant.
Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin - Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves.
Two absolute vocal titans singing of female liberation could never ail for me!! This is another song that I am proud to say I have performed with Annie on stage. It is a true anthem of freedom and the way Annie and Aretha perform the song is like the shackles have been released. The thing that appeals to me is that they "take it to church" vocally, they do not hold back vocally but not so as to overwhelm the listener, you can still join in with it. Completely foot-stomping.
Michael McDonald and Patti Labelle - On My Own.
The pathos of love lost in this song is heartbreaking. You feel it in the vocal. I heard that Patti and Michael were not even in the same country when they both contributed their vocals to the song. Although you cannot tell at all on the recording, that story just adds to the wistfulness of the song. I used to sing this over and over, begging my sister to sing it with me! The vocals towards the end of the song, where they cross and overlap, make me want to cry.
Thanks Beverley - we look forward to seeing you on September 11.
